This document is for HP DeskJet 3630, 3631, 3632, 3633, 3634, 3635, 3636, 3637, 3638, DeskJet Ink Advantage 3635, 3636, 3638, and DeskJet Ink Advantage Ultra 4729 All-in-One printers.

The printer is working, but the printout is missing black or color ink, or the printed page is blank or low on ink.

Step 1: Use genuine HP ink cartridges

HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled ink cartridges. If you are not using genuine HP ink cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the problem. Shop for replacement ink cartridges and other supplies fromhp storeor local retailers.

Step 2: Check the estimated ink levels

Low ink levels can affect print quality.

notes:

Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When the indicator shows low ink levels, consider replacing the ink cartridges to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace the ink cartridges until the print quality becomes unacceptable.

Check the estimated ink levels in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista.

  1. Load unused U.S. Letter or A4-size plain paper into the input tray.

  2. If the printer is not already on, press the power button to turn on the printer.

  1. Load unused U.S. Letter or A4-size plain paper into the input tray.

  2. If the printer is not already on, press the power button to turn on the printer.

Step 3: Replace low or empty ink cartridges

Replace the very low or empty ink cartridge, and then try printing again. If all ink cartridges show normal ink levels, skip this step.

  1. If the printer is not already on, press the power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Load plain white paper into the input tray.

  3. Open the outer door.

  4. Open the ink cartridge access door.

    The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

    Wait until the car is idle and quiet before proceeding.

  5. Gently press down on the ink cartridge to release it, and then pull the ink cartridge out of its slot.

  6. Remove the new ink cartridge from its package, and then remove the plastic tape.

    warn:

    Do not attempt to remove copper electrical straps.

    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Do not replace the protective tape on the contacts. Handling these parts can cause clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  7. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the nozzles facing the printer, and then insert the ink cartridge into its slot. Make sure the ink cartridges are inserted into the correct slots.

    • Tri-color ink cartridge (HP DeskJet 3630, 4720 Printers - Printer Prints Blank Pages or No Black or Color Ink (8)) into the slot on the left.

  8. Push the ink cartridge forward into the slot until it clicks into place.

  9. Repeat these steps to replace another ink cartridge, if necessary.

  10. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  11. Close the outer door.

  12. Follow any prompts on your computer screen.

  13. Wait about 30 seconds for the alignment page to print automatically.

Proceed to the next step to align the ink cartridges.

Step 4: Align the ink cartridges

Align the ink cartridges for best print quality.

  1. Lift the scanner cover.

  2. Place the alignment page print-side down on the upper right corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.

  3. Close the scanner lid.

    The printer aligns the ink cartridges.

    If the alignment page does not print automatically, you can print an alignment page manually using the HP Printer Assistant Software (Windows) or Printer Utility (macOS or OS X).

If the print quality problem persists after replacing the empty ink cartridge, continue to the next step.

Step 5: Clean the ink cartridges

Use the HP software to clean the print cartridges, and then evaluate the results.

Step 6: Identify the problem ink cartridge

Identify the ink cartridge that is causing the print quality problem.

  1. Review the print quality diagnostic page that you printed in the previous solution.

  2. Check the text and color blocks on the page.

  • If you notice any defects in the black text on the page,BlackIt's an ink cartridge problem.

  • If you notice any defects in the colored blocks on the page,TricolorIt's an ink cartridge problem.

Step 7: Replace the problem ink cartridge

Replace the problem ink cartridge with a new genuine HP ink cartridge.

If your ink cartridge or printhead is defective, it may be under warranty. To check the warranty on ink or toner supplies, go toPrinter and page yield overview, then view thelimited warrantyYour supplies information.

  1. If the printer is not already on, press the power button to turn on the printer.

  2. Load plain white paper into the input tray.

  3. Open the outer door.

  4. Open the ink cartridge access door.

Step 9: Servicing the Printer
